Document closes after clicking hyperlink to another Word document

In Word 97 if I click on a hyperlink to another Word document, the first
document closes if there are no unsaved changes. This is odd behavior.
Why should Word assume that my clicking on a hyperlink to another
document means I am done with this document?

Is there any way I can prevent the document from closing when I click on
the hyperlink--other than always remembering to stick a change in the
document before clicking the link.
