Document Imaging 2007 Crashes on Scanning

I have a user with a copy of Office Professional 2007, and 2 Epson scanners
(a CX11NF and a CX9400Fax). Microsoft Document Imaging works with the CX11NF
and crashes when my user attempts to scan from the CX9400Fax. I've done my
research and the problem is that when the CX9400Fax installs, it
automatically names itself "Epson CX9300F/CX9400Fax/DX9400F". I've found a
known issue with long filenames in SP3 and it seems to be the case here as
well.

I can rename the scanner under My Computer > Imaging Devices to a shorter
name. After doing this, when I pull up Document Imaging, click on Scan, and
click on Scanner to select my scanner, I have 2 versions of the CX9400 - the
one I renamed to a shorter, more Windows-friendly name, and the original long
beast of a name. The shorter named scanner works perfectly, except that it
doesn't provide the ability to scan a double-sided page (which my user
insists is necessary from that scanner). When I attempt to scan using the
longer-named scanner, Document Imaging crashes every time.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled the scanner, gone through the registry and
wracked my brain but I CANNOT figure out how to rename the second instance of
the scanner so that Document Imaging doesn't crash! Has anyone else had this
problem, or have any thoughts? I'm at my wit's end.
