I would first try Tools>Options>"Save" tab,
change "Default format" to Word Document (*.doc).

If that doesn't work, try opening a blank document, save
it as a .dot file called Normal.dot

put it in the following applicable folder:

For Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium
Edition (Me)
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

For Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Me with User
Profiles Enabled, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:
C:\Windows\Profiles\Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates

For Microsoft Windows 2000
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
