Document versions function in MSWord 2003

When using document versions in Word 2003, the versions are not visible in
the version window if file is on a shared network drive or removable drive.
The indicator is in the status bar, but when I open the version window to
view, the window is blank unless I have been using a file on my local drive.
If it is on a removable or one of the shared network drives at my office,
nothing shows. Any suggestions?
