Dormant hard returns and spaces in Word?

T

Terri

I'm wondering if Word has what WordPerfect calls
a "dormant" hard return or space. It hides a blank line
if it occurs at the top of a page, and hides an extra
space if it occurs at the beginning of a line. In Word I
notice I am getting a blank line at the top of a page when
I double-space between paragraphs at the bottom of a page.
If I delete this line, it comes back to haunt me later in
editing. Any suggestions?

Don't double-space between paragraphs, but set a paragraph style to have
Space Before or Space After. Word will automatically suppress that space at
the top of a page, but it will not suppress a blank line that you have
clearly taken the trouble to deliberately insert.

Use Format | Style, select Normal, click Modify, drop down menu Format... at
bottom, Paragraph options to change this.

OOPS! I'm sorry that I've repeated my question here--I
just realized that my original question was a few pages
down, and I got some great answers then and now--thanks
very much. I'd like to thank the people who post to this
board. As someone who is switching from WP 6.1 DOS to
Word for Windows, I feel like a total idiot even with 15+
years of computer experience. But every day I come over
here and pick a topic and learn one new PRACTICAL thing
about Word, and I feel like eventually I'm going to get
the hang of this...it's invaluable...!
