Download pictures

I'm probably missing a setting right in front of me but how do I get
Entourage 2004 to always download pictures in email?

Thanks,

Dave Doyle

Choose Preferences from the Entourage menu and go to the Security section.

As explained on that window, checking the appropriate box will only download
pictures from addresses in your Address Book and Mailing List Manager. All
other pictures will have to be manually downloaded.

I was afraid of this. I'm not at all happy at MS making these choices for
me.

This really stinks.

"Pictures" can contain code that might be getting information about you from
your computer, or at the very least confirms your email address to spam
ventures leading a lot more spam. If you don't mind, add the sender to your
Address Book (and don't check the pref that disables auto-downloading of
pictured from contacts), Within a very short time you'll soon have pictures
from all these spam merchants, and every one else, downloading
automatically, if that's what you want. For the remaining new senders, it
really downloads very quickly, you know, clicking on the link.

People have been asking for just such a message-by-message control for a
very long time. In Entourage X and 2001, it was all or nothing, controlled
just by a universal pref. Now you have much finer control on a message by
message basis.
This really stinks.

I see.

I would be REALLY unhappy if MS had the function turned on by default. This
is a major secority (and spam prevention) feature.

Well I am clicking on the "download pictures" text and it isn't downloading
the pictures. I click it again and it disappears! And still doesn't
download them.

I am in an industry where I get tons of flyers from 100's of suppliers, and
adding all the addresses is way too much work!

I'm using the Preview version of 2004.

Hitting cmd-= is too much work?

If so, you can easily create a rule that adds the sender of all messages (or
just ones matching a certain criterion) to the address book.

OK---except when I click download pictures, first it does nothing, then the
line with that text disappears--and it still does nothing.

What if you just do not want a zillion addresses in your address book?

No, but bloating my address book with all these addresses for no other
purpose than to enable a function that I should be able to enable with
a prefernce setting is ridiculous. This is the worst addition to
Entourage. I don't want to be told by microsoft how to work!

Then clearly you shouldn't stand for this gross injustice to life, liberty,
truth and all things good and nice in this world. Take a stand and go back
to Entourage X. That will show them!

:)

Thanks for the constructive feedback. Now, can we get back to the question at hand?

Thanks

I was also concerned that I might have to have a bunch of e-mail
addresses in my contacts so that pictures would download
automatically. However, as it turns out, the "Safe Domains" feature
for Junk works for automatic picture downloading.

Here's what to do:
1. In Entourage 2004, go to Tools -> Junk Email Protection...
2. Click on the "Safe Domains" tab
3. In the Safe Domains dialog box, type in the domain names for each
address that you'd like to be exempt from being declared as Junk *and*
those you'd like to have pictures automatically download in their
messages. Separate each domain with a comma.
4. Click the OK button
5. Close and Restart Entourage 2004 to have this take effect
immediately

So, if you receive HTML messages from (e-mail address removed),
(e-mail address removed), (e-mail address removed), and (e-mail address removed) AND
you wanted to make sure those messages always downloaded the pictures
automatically, then you would only need to enter "greatstuff.com,
mysupplier.com" (minus the quotes) into the "Safe Domains" box. All
messages from those domains (including any future letters from - for
example - (e-mail address removed)) would not be treated as Junk and also
have pictures downloaded automatically.

NOTE: Due to their frequent use by spammers, I would recommend against
adding yahoo.com or hotmail.com to your Safe Domains list.

Hope this helps. - SM

This was very helpful, thank you!

It is pretty annoying to have to click on "downlaod images" for every mail
you want to see. It would be nice if there were just a preference that
allowed you to download them all by default!

You could go back to Entourage X. However, downloading all pictures by
default will increase your spam by about 30,000% since that's how spambots
verify yours is a "live" email address and sell that information to
thousands of other spammers.
