Downloading Word documents received as Email attachments

All word documents I receive as Email attachments via OutlookExpress produce
a FILE CONVERSION box and will not download. I believe these documents
probably fall into many differant categories: Text, Photos, Graphics, etc. I
don't understand the File conversion box or how to use it. I don't remember
ever encountering it before I was automatically up-graded to Word 2002 with
my new computer. Can anyone help?

Instead of opening the Word attachment directly from the email, try
right-clicking on the attachment, saving it to your hard drive, and opening
it from there. In Word, click on File | Open, and in the "Files of type"
box, see that "Recover text from any file" is not selected; instead, choose
"All Word documents" or "All files". If you still have problems, then it's
possible that an email server somewhere between you and the sender is
corrupting the Word files (happens more than you'd think). It may help to
ask the sender to zip-compress the files before sending them to you.
