Dynamically link Word Documents into report

I'm working with a large group of word documents that are modified
irregularly by their owners. I would like to programmatically link these
documents into a Report. Is this possible, and how? I tried using a linked
word object, and programmatically assigning it's "source document" value on
Detail_Format.. but the displayed letter didn't change.

I use Access to piece together these letters with reports and print a
complete package to PDF. This covers currently a dozen different client
packages, but can output up to several hundred packages daily.
I have already recreated these letters in Access. Due to the formatting,
they are mostly just embedded in reports. However, this is bloating the db,
and I'm getting tired of manually updating these every time the letter owners
need a word changed. While I could use a linked version of the letter in each
report, I would like to programmatically link these letters into a single
report, which would be a subreport within the full package report. This way,
when the letter owners make edits, I only have to replace the linked document
with the new version. And if a new client is added, I only have to add a new
client record to the db in order to pull the new letter, rather than creating
a new report for each client.

Any advice?
