e-mail form results

Please bear with me as I am a novice at this.
I have a form on my web site that is set to post the results to a file on
the web site as well as e-mail the results to me.
The posting to a file works, but it will not e-mail the results.
My host says I need to insert the following html code to make it work:
action=/cgi/gdform.cgi using "get" as the action.
Does this sound right?
Where do I put this code?

Thanks, Mike

Your hosting service has their own custom email form handler. If you change
the form's action property to use their CGI form handler, you won't get the
functionality of the file saving.

This sounds as if you have to choose between sending the form results by
email, or storing the results in a file.

From your hosts response it seems that the email transport has not been set
up on the FP extensions, and they offer a Perl/CGI script instead. If the
script can only deal with querystrings (method = "GET", not "action") then
the results emailed will be limited in length. It is unlikely (though not
impossible) that this script will also store results in a file on the
website.

If you use the code, change the form properties (right click anywhere in the
form and choose Form properties) to "send to other"
In the dropdown select "Custom ISAPI, NSAPI, CGI, or ASP script"
Click the Options button, and complete the action and method text boxes.
Click OK, Click OK. Save the page (in FP2000 you *must* save the page,
sometimes changes to properties are not saved unless the page is edited
elsewhere as well).

It sounds like Mike is using GoDaddy for his host. I just went through this
exercise - and it's not a fun one, but at least I'm now getting an e-mail
when a user submits a form.

You will lose the ability to show a nice Confirmation Page - with the info
submitted by the user.

You will lose the data Validation capabilities of Front Page.

You will lose the ability to post to a file (in the private folder)

The email you get MUST sort the data by the field name. This may be a minor
problem but why!!!!

You'll probably lose a lot of hair trying to figure this out while dealing
with GoDaddy's support.

Is it that big of a deal for them to use the mail transport system in the
FrontPage extensions?
Why wouldn't they?

Thanks, Mike

The email transport in the FP extensions can result in a spammers paradise -
it depends on how easy it is to lock down the SMTP server used.
One easy, secure way to lock down an SMTP server is to insist on Authorised
Users only. This can be done using a script, where the script checks the
source of the email and passes a UserID and Password to the server, but
cannot be done using the FP extensions - the extensions cannot pass UserID
and Password.
There are other methods which can be used with the FP extensions, but they
may be impractical on a large, growing, server farm.

Just for the record, none of my hosts allow email transport through FP
extensions, but they do allow me to write my own ASP, PHP, Perl scripts to
do the job.

I went back to GoDaddy tech support again, they bumped me up the tech
support ladder and they made it work. They said something in the FP
extensions was corrupted and had to be reloaded.
The form results now posts to the file and is e-mailed to me!
All this with no cgi script!

Thanks for your help!
Mike

I was just guessing "GoDaddy" Glad you got it all working. I'll try again,
now that they have FP fixed.

You are right Mike. It's now working perfectly at GoDaddy - after a very
frustrating week. They didn't even have the courtesy to tell me it was
fixed.

The thing that gets me, is the initial fix was to put in some cgi script,
when the problem was some FrontPage extensions were corrupted.
I guess I was finally put in touch with the right tech support person!
I'm very glad it helped you too!

The "initial fix" was provided by techies who know next to nothing about
FrontPage. Their knee jerk answer for all e-mail/form questions is to
provide the canned answer which uses cgi scripts. Your ability to get some
decent support is commendable. Do you remember the name of the person who
provided that?

No, he actually called me on the phone to tell me what was wrong and what
was going to be done to fix it.
I was out of the office on a job and didn't have time to chat so I didn't
get any information from him.
I'm sorry I didn't now!

Thanks, Mike
