email attachment(doc) closes when opened

a document is received as a email attachment and I try to
open it with word the document closes.It will only open
for a few seconds and then closes.I am using 2003.

For reasons unknown, Word documents sent as email attachments are prone to
corruption. Have the sender ZIP the document first, and email you the zip
file.
