Email Downloads unexpectedly from server

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I have a Bellsouth email account. Periodically Entourage downloads hundreds of emails that have previously been downloaded, opened and many deleted. I don't see a setting that addresses deleting emails from the server when downloaded. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this and how to prevent it?

Tools > Accounts > (your account) > Options > Leave a copy of each
message on the server.
