email notification sound

Freddo

I've just started using Outlook 2003 and am finding that when I receive a new
email a sound does not play every time. I've gone into advanced options and
the play a sound box is ticked. I've gone into the control panel and a sound
is linked to new mail notification.
Strangely when I send an email to myself to test it, the sound notification
works. However when email from others arrives, I get silence.
What is going on?
I tried outlook express to see if the same problem was happening there. It
wasn't. It's only happening in Outlook 2003.

If it is hit and miss, how often are you checking for new messages. (I want
to say there is some logic built-in where the new mail sound isn't called
every X minutes.)

I only check it 2-3 times a day. I can't see why the sound wouldn't play each
time mail arrived.

On the messages you get, are any moved by rules? (e.g. do you have anything
left in the Inbox after Outlook checks for new mail.) Also what type of
account are you working with?

I'm not sure what you're referring to. The only emails that lead to a sound
notification are the test ones I sent to myself. Even the ones that notify
me that you left a message came in silence.
I don't know what you mean by type of account?
Can you make any practical suggestions on what I could try?
Thanks

I have a similar issue with mail that has a rule against it, does this type
of mail ALSO need a sound rule associated?

I'm trying to figure out the issue at hand and how to duplicate. For
example, when I ask what type of account, I'm trying to find out if you two
are working with a POP3, IMAP, or Exchange mailbox. When I asked about
rules, I want to know when items come in, are all items moved by rules to
other folders where Inbox folder doesn't see anything new.

For Outlook 2003 (SP1, I believe), yes. Messages moved from the Inbox to
other folders do NOT trigger the alerts.

ok, makes sense thanks.
It is pop3 account and the ones that do not trigger sound are moved to a
separate folder by a rule when they come in. never thought to check if rule
affected sound until neo asked about rules.
thanks guys

All this discussion about rules, got me investigating and I discovered how to
create a rule to get the sound working. So indirectly you were able to help
me. Thanks.
