Embedded pdf objects redux

C

cdn.i.am

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have received a word document containing embedded PDF document that was created on a windows machine (Office 2003, Windows XP). I realize this issue has been raised before, but I have yet to find a resolution.

The pdf is indeed embedded. It is displayed as an icon. On double-clicking the icon, the error "Word cannot locate the server application for AcroExch.Document.7 objects" appears. I have Acrobat 9 Pro installed.

Please do not tell me this is "due to a design restriction" as stated elsewhere on this forum. This is a BUG. When will it be fixed?

It is also reasonable to expect to be able to embed the pdf file, just like the Windows version does. When will that capability be available?

No offense, but you seem to be under the mistaken impression that the only
difference between Microsoft Office for Windows & Microsoft Office:Mac is
the labels on the boxes they ship in :) For better or worse that simply is
not the case & feature parity has never been a reality. The respective apps
for the 2 different operating systems are compatible & comparable, but by no
means identical.

Although I fully understand your frustration, that particular capability is
one of many differences. I'm afraid you've found no resolution because there
is none to be had. It isn't a "bug", even though you're welcome to call it
what ever you choose. The fact is that it is excluded from the design of
Office apps for the Mac. As for 'why' it's excluded I can only speculate but
that wouldn't resolve anything even if I were to guess correctly :) Since
the capability isn't there to be broken it can't be "fixed" & I'm afraid it
isn't something that can simply be stuck in by way of an update.

I'm sorry you don't like the only truthful answer to the question, but the
soonest something different can reasonably be expected is in the next
release scheduled for late 2010 - early 2011. None of us know whether that
will happen or not.

No offence taken. Thank you for your honesty.

Since we are encouraged to provide feedback:
The primary (possibly only) reason I continue to use Office is for compatibility with colleagues who use Windows. While I would (begrudgingly) accept that the ability to embed a pdf file may fall under feature parity, the ability to open the embedded pdf falls within my definition of compatibility. That would be relatively trivial to implement using Open Scripting Architecture.

In case this helps others, the best workaround I have is to open the file with Winword under Parallels, and extract all the embedded files.

You're most definitely encouraged to provide feedback but this isn't the
most effective venue for doing so. Those who participate here are users who
attempt to assist other users. If you take advantage of the Send Feedback
item in Word's Help menu your comments go directly to those within MS who
have input on product development.

Hello,
I find this conversation very, very interesting. I recently bought a Mac, which I also use for my consulting business with large companies who are PC users.

The ONLY reason I too have Microsoft Office is to be able to work with my clients. This embedded PDF file (or lack thereof) is stopping me from being successful on a large deal I am trying to complete right now.

I almost went out and bought a new PC yesterday just to be able to complete this project. I may still do it this weekend, and hand over the Mac to my son... probably never to return again, I am sad to say.

I, too, appreciate the honesty (I thought I must be doing Something Wrong!) because I thought these were also completely compatible...

Hi Janice:

Don't give in so easy: your Son is a nice fellow but he does NOT deserve a
new computer, he hasn't been THAT good.

Spend $70.00 on a copy of Parallels
http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/

And about ten bucks on a copy of Windows XP (or use the one from your old
computer...) Make sure you run Microsoft Update as often as needed to get
Windows fully up-to-date before installing software on it, or it will play
up.

Then you will be able to run Windows on your Mac whenever you absolutely
HAVE to. I have four favours of Windows and Windows Office on this laptop,
so when I go to a customer premises I don't get caught out.

Cheers

Hi Janice,

Think you should have a look at Parallels or Fusion. You can run the full MS office for windows in this environment, and get around any Office for MAC incompatibility experienced.

It all actually runs very nicely in Fusion with Unity. Looks like a native mac app almost!

That said.. I still prefer my Office for mac, and look forward to the next release!

Cheers,

Tim.

Hi Tim:

I agree.

I run Parallels on this computer, for exactly that reason.

I have FOUR versions of Windows and Windows Word available, because like
Janice, I too make my living with clients using all sorts of odd things.

The great thing about Parallels is that when Windows grunges up, I simply
delete it! I then copy a backup, and off I go again: total time lost: 10
minutes :)

Cheers
