OPENING AND IMBEDDED PDF

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I receive Word docs with embedded pdf files. I can open the pdf's in Word 97 for Windows, but not in any Word for Mac version. In Office 2008 for Mac, embedded pdf's come up as an unknown objects, prompts me to 'convert', opens a dialog box to either 'convert/ to package' or 'activate' which is disabled. Convert to package says 'The server application, source file, or item cannot be found... When I click on the pdf object in word for windows, it opens in acrobat reader

When a file is "embedded" in another file, it is marked with the name and
version number of the application that will open it.

Your Mac may not have Adobe Reader at the correct version. So when Word
asks OS X to "Can you find an application to open this!" OS X is answering
"No. I don't know what it is."

Either that, or the embedded file is damaged and nothing will open it...

Chances are, installing the latest version of Adobe Reader will fix the
issue. I hope...

Cheers

Sorry, that didn't help
The same embedded pdf in the word doc doc will launch acrobat from Word for Windows, and hit a wall in Word for Mac

So which version of Reader do you have on the PC, and which do you have on
the Mac?

If you save a PDF file to your Mac hard disk and double-click it, does it
launch Reader?

Is the document you want to open the PDF in saved to your hard disk?

Which version of Reader made the PDF?

Which updates do you have applied to Word on the Mac?

Sorry: I am running out of ideas here...

Acrobat reader 9.0 for Windows XP and 9.0 for Mac OS 10.5. The mac's pdf preferences are set to open with Acrobat rather than Preview.
The issue seems to be Word handling the file differently between the OSs, not the ability of Acrobat to open them.
I don't know what version of Word or what method of pdf creation is being used on the creation side. These are docs I recieve in emails from another company.

Yeah, me too - but there's definitely something amiss. I haven't had an
opportunity to investigate it but I'm having a similar problem when I
attempt to verify suspicions of what I thought the problem might be. The
error is worded quite differently, but amounts to the same failure to open
the PDF embedded in the doc.

I'll supply details when I've had an opportunity to dig a bit deeper :)

Any chance you could email me a sample that does it?

I can get the test guys to have a closer look and put it on the list to get
this fixed.

Did anyone send you files? I would like to find a solution to this and would
be happy to send a sample.

Thanks,

I got one file, but the developers did not find it conclusive.

Please try to include in your email a "history" of the document (i.e., to
the best of your recollection, which version of Word created it, and which
versions has it been on since) and a description of your hardware/software
versions.

They are particularly interested in OS version, RAM and Available Disk
Space. They are wondering whether this is memory-related.

Cheers
