emf files

I produced a large document in Word 2002 with many .emf
files generated from Illustrator. When I opened the
document for revision this past week, all the figures
generated with this .emf format were not present and an X
appeared in the figure window along with the words Adobe
systems. Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem
is here. The docunent was fine 3-4 months ago so I can
only guess it's some type of Windows update issue. The
Illustrator and Word programs are identical.

This is a known bug/glitch in a recent Microsoft Security
patch that was released in April.

The problem is that the Windows security patch "breaks"
the ability for most MS Office applications to display
and print EMF files produced from recent versions of
Illustrator.

Although Microsoft has posted a "fix", we have tried it
in our company and the problem reappears days later!

Our only workaround is to use PNG or JPG as the file
format until this problem gets resolved.

I hear that the Windows XP SP2 patch will fix the
problem, but we'll see.
