Enabling macros????

Hi,

I am far from a computer whiz and need some help! I just downloaded
the 2003 MS Office Professional to my computer and now get a message
that pops up every time I open or close a Word document.

The message says: The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer
to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine
how to enable macros.

I tried looking at the online help but couldn't find anything about
"enabling macros"......I have no idea what a macro even is! I need some
help in simple English about how to get this annoying pop up to
stop.....Thank you!

Office Professional cannot be legally downloaded from any location. So I
would be very suspicious of what you have.

Also, the macro security that you are facing has been implemented to protect
people from themselves. I would suggest that if you do not know what macro
is, it would be irresponsible to advise you how to disable the macro
security. This is for your own benefit. Just click on the appropriate
button in that dialog so that it is dismissed and get on with what you want
to do.

Users often use the word "download" when they mean "install." Probably this
is what Kathy meant.

But if I type "enable macros" into the "Type a question for help" box in
Word 2003, I get quite a list of relevant Help topics, though they are
probably not in the order that would be most helpful to someone encountering
this message. A good place to start is the article "About helping protect
files from macro viruses," which explains what macros and macro viruses are,
the various security levels (I didn't even know there was a Very High
level--guess that was added in 2003), and so on. Another useful article for
the beginner is "Troubleshoot macro security and warnings."

Kathy, the simple answer to your question is that you need to set your macro
security level to Medium (Tools | Options | Security: Macro Security or
Tools | Macro | Security) and, on the Trusted Sources tab of the dialog,
check the box for "Trust all installed templates and add-ins." The result of
this will be that the macros in all your templates in the User Templates and
Workgroup Templates folders will be trusted, as will macros in templates and
add-ins in Word's Startup folder.

Unfortunately, the trust does not extend to the Office Startup folder, so
you may still get a dialog asking whether you want to enable macros in any
add-ins you may have stored there. If the add-in in question has a digital
signature, you will have the option of checking a box to "Trust all add-ins
from this source." If the source is one you feel can be trusted, you can
check this box. In some cases, you may find that the add-in is one you don't
need, in which case you can move it out of the Office Startup folder, which
will also relieve you of the startup message.
