Entering actuals

Hi all,
I have a project plan where most of the tasks are 'fixed work" type so when
I level the resources I obtain new finish dates. Now the "fixed work' I
entered is a best estimate because we don't have any records or way to
calculate it. When I enter actual start date and actual finish dates then it
recalculates the units when in fact the units did not change, but the "work"
needed did. Should I change to "fix units' when entering actuals so that
units don't change and show things like 400% in the Gant chart?
