Entourage CPU spikes

Entourage e-mail has suddenly stopped working for me. When I do a
send/receive, I get the spinning beachball for a few minutes, and then I get
an error message saying no server response. I'm using Office 2004, latest
update installed, on an intel Mac Mini with the latest OS X software. My
internet connection is fine, as I'm able to access the web, this newsgroup,
etc. When I look at activity monitor while Entourage is hung, it shows
99-100% CPU usage. Any thoughts or troubleshooting tips? Problem doesn't
seem to exist in any other program.

Correction. The error message says "Connection to the server failed or was
dropped. Mail could not be sent. Error -3253." There is a message in my
outbox that won't get sent.

One more update. When I deleted the message from my outbox (it never did
get sent), the problem disappeared. Is that of any use to diagnose, or
should I just drop it?
