Entourage freezes when retrieving mail

All of a sudden Entourage has started to freeze when retrieving mail? I have about 7 accounts it checks. You can see them being checked in the progress window, if there is nothing to retrieve it cycles through no problem. If after a while one of the accounts has a message to retrieve it will freeze with half the message appearing to be downloaded? If I try to force quit it says Entourage not responding - but here's the ringer, if I wait a few minutes, a warning appears with a little box with an icon that looks like an external hard drive that says "Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again" I click OK and it unfreezes and downloads the message? This is driving me nuts! I've run and repaired disk permissions reinstalled OSX 10.5.6 combo installer to no avail!

If you haven't already, launch Entourage with the Option key held down.
In the Database Utility window select the option to Verify your
Database. Repair it if needed.

Hope this helps!
