I am experiencing the same thing. I have used Entourage for the past
year or so and all of a sudden this happens. I have kept current on
all updates. I even removed entourage, reinstalled it and it does the
same thing. It almost seems like something happened during the last
upgrade that has caused this but I am only guessing. Any ideas?

Several options:
- the database is corrupted and you need to rebuild it (alt when you
launch the app)
- Spotlight is attempting to index the MUD folder (add the Microsoft
User Data folder to the Exclude list in the Spotlight prefpane)
- you use projects with a lot of contacts and it's taking forever to
link all the associated e-mails: don;t use contacts with a lot of
e-mails in projects.

Have you added ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities to
your Spotlight Exclude list in the System PrefPanes? Drag the folder into
the pane rather than use the + (add) button. It could be that Spotlight it
trying to index you database and inducing this general slowdown. Entourage
has a different mechanism to provide Spotlight information for e-mails and
contacts so you don't loose this functionality by excluding the database.

Take a look at iFreeMem and see if you are experiencing memory problems.

How do I test in a new User. Is that a new account in SysPref. Or
something else?

Thanks again.

There must be a message that is stuck in the outbox, hold down the
shift key and launch Entourage - this prevents Entourage from sending
and receiving at launch, then click on the outbox and either delete
any messages in the outbox or drag any of the messages to the drafts
folder.

The original description of the problem:

Normally, a problem message keeps Entourage from opening. The fix for this
is to hold down the shift key at startup of Entourage to disable schedules.
You could then turn off Preview Pane and check the server looking for the
suspect message.

Since you were able to download with your current Identity in a new User,
this indicates problems with your preferences.

Remove these preferences in ~/Library/Preferences/:

Com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist
Com.microsoft.DatabaseDaemon.plist
Com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
Microsoft/Entourage Preferences folder

Quit and relaunch Entourage with newly created preferences. Does this work?

One other thought is to check your cache files in ~/ Library>Caches.

com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
tasmanbrowser.cache

I am having the same problem in the reverse order. I have had an email with
attachment stuck in my in-box for the past two days. Every attempt to remove
it fails and requires an Entourage force quit and relaunch to restore proper
working. I have removed the suggested preferences, but without success. Is
there any way to remove this askwardblocker?
Many thanks

Are you saying it's an incoming message? Is the message completely
downloaded. First, try to delete using your web access to your email. If
it's off the server and just in Entourage try selecting all messages in that
folder rather than just the one message and delete all.

Check the Entourage Temp folder in the Microsoft User Data folder. Try
deleting the attachment if it's showing there.

A rebuild might help with the problem.
