Entourage schedule doesn't always receive email

Mark Benton

Entourage 2008 (12.1.7) and Mac OS 10.5.7. Up to date system and Office
software.

I've been using Entourage for years. I have 4 IMAP accounts. I have a
schedule set up to check for email every 3 minutes. I'm confident that it is
set up correctly. Often, but not always, the schedule will run but newly
received email will not be downloaded to my computer. I can watch the
schedule run in the Progress window, see it connect to each account email
address, and finish its job. Immediately thereafter, if I click on the IMAP
Inbox, which forces Entourage to check for mail, email will arrive. Other
times I will manually check for email (option k) and mail will arrive that
had been sent minutes or even hours ago, during which time the schedule
would have run many times.

This does not happen every time, but often enough to be irritating.

I've fiddled with my account settings in the Options window, but to no
avail. I've fiddled with setting up different schedules, but nothing.

This only began happening a few weeks ago. I've racked my brain, but cannot
think of any action that I did a few weeks ago that would be related.

I even made a new identity (rebuilt the accounts, transferred in addresses
and stored mail), but the problem persists.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Since you're dealing with an IMAP account, you'll want to check a few
things.

First, ensure that your IMAP account is indeed part of your Send &
Receive schedule. The easiest way to to this is to go to Tools -->
Accounts..., double-click your IMAP account and select:

Include this account in my "Send & Receive All" schedule.

While you're in your account settings, go to the Options tab. In the
Server Options section select:

Live Sync (stay connected with the server)
Check for unread messages in subscribed folders

De-select:

Only connect to Inbox

Select:

Connect immediately on launch

Keep in mind that your IMAP server may not support the Live Sync option.
You can verify whether or not it does by right-clicking (or
Control-clicking) your IMAP account in the folder list of the main
Entourage window and selecting "Get Info". In the results returned from
the server, look for "IDLE". If you see "IDLE" then you can use Live Sync.

Otherwise, you must rely on your schedule to retrieve mail. Be sure to
keep your Inbox as empty as possible (don't use it for storage) for
optimal performance. You should archive old messages in a new mail
folder outside of the Inbox.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. I've done the settings as you said and will check it
out.
