Equation Editor on Mac Leopard

Ever since I installed Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard), some of the symbol/notation used in Equation Editor/MathType will not show properly on Word (X or 2004), such as the 'hat' and the 'tilde'.

Can you advise how to fix the problem?

Another problem is when a word document contains many formulas created from Equation Editor, it would show an error message 'no space available, save to another disk' even the size is only 300 k or 400 k. Why? How to fix it?

Try using a Utility of some type that dumps Font Cache files it could be
that the font cache was corrupted by the change over to leopard.

One the second problem 2004 is not a Leopard ready program so will have
to run in Rosetta. could be that Rosetta is interfering with with the
Equation Editor. I believe that component works by VBA and VBA is broken
on Leopard.

This is a font-related problem; open Font Book and see if selecting all the
fonts and clicking on Edit>Resolve Duplicates solves the problem. Or maybe
you have access to a more advanced font utility that will do the same thing
for you. Don't forget to reboot the Mac afterwards to clear out any font
caches.

I'd like to jump into the fray!

Equation Editor is a proper application. And it is a Visual Basic for
Applications add-in. These two concepts are not mutually exclusive.

Equation Editor in Office 2008 is a bit of trickery, as it is the "old"
version that was around for Office 2004 and it is not the the "new" version
from Office 2007 (Windows). Consequently, Office 2008 Mac is incompatible
with Office 2007 Windows with regard to Equation Editor.

Eq1uation Editor is made by dessci, which has a web page dedicated to asking
people to please help convince Microsoft to restore Visual Basic for
Applications for Mac Office so that their software will work properly.

Equation Editor is the reduced feature version of MathType, which is also

I would go to the Design Science website and download the trial version of
MathType.

That will bring in the special fonts you need.

After the trial period, if you decide not to pay for MathType, it will
degrade to the "Free" version. But you will still keep the fonts, and more
functions than you have now.

Oh ! Okay! So much stuff has died on the vine because of VBA being
deleted in 2008.

And I'll Huh! back at you. I thought that the MVP Poobahs have said that
VBA was just barely working on PPC, so they left it out. This appeared
to mean with the switch over to Leopard and Intel they couldn't get it
to work.

Now with your comment that VBA works nicely with Leopard I am scratching
my head. :-\

Intel does not equal Leopard. There's your key confusion.

It was the switch to Intel that made VBA get lost. They couldn't or
didn't port it to run natively on Intel. But only Office 2008 runs
natively on Intel--hence, no VBA. VBA works fine in Office 2004 and
earlier, which run through Rosetta on Intel machines.

such a big job they did not have the time to include VBA in Office 2008.

Is there anyone who can consistently get a tilde placed over a character to print correctly in equation editor/word 2004 on a mac running any version of Leopard? i have seen many comments suggesting this is a font corruption issue and suggesting possible fixes, but is there anyone who does not have the problem?

Probably anyone who has installed the Evaluation version of MathType from
Design Science

Equation Editor is a cut-down of MathType.

It's worth a try: it installs new fonts that may have a better chance of
working. If you decide not to pay for it, at the end of the evaluation time
it degrades, but the free version continues to provide more functionality
than the "Equation Editor" than you started with.

If I understand correctly, mathtype lacks one critical feature--my coauthors won't be able to edit my equations with their equation editor. I'd happily upgrade, but I'll never be able to convince all of my various coauthors to do so. Additionally, many journals explicitly support manuscripts submitted using equation editor, but it isn't at all clear to me that this extends to mathtype.... If there is ANY other solution that would be preferable.

I don't know of a publisher who accepts Equation Editor and does not
accept MathType. In fact, I do know of publishers who specifically
request manuscripts in Word + MathType.

And you "sort of" understand correctly. You are correct that Equation
Editor cannot edit MathType equations, but the MathType evaluation CAN
edit MathType equations. Specifically, if you download and install the
30-day evaluation of MathType, and choose not to buy it, it will
become MathType Lite after 30 days. MathType Lite loses much of
MathType's functionality, but one feature it retains is the ability to
edit MathType equations -- forever. If your co-authors don't want to
buy MathType, fine. All they need to do is to use MathType Lite. (This
is true both for Macintosh and Windows, and the two are compatible.)

BIG PROBLEM HERE. Math Type is NOT available for the New MS Office 2008. I am having a huge issue with my upgrade.

I'm using the built in equation editor, and the equations look nice after I complete them. However, when I save the equations become fuzzy (low resolution). They are simply unacceptable for typeface.

Has Design Science found a way around this????

No: THAT one is Microsoft's bug

You can partially work-around it by copying the equation into a graphics
application, saving as PDF, then using Insert>Picture>From File to insert it
into the Word document.

It's laborious, but it will get you a printable equation until the bug gets
fixed.

Another work-around is to find a copy of Windows Word. Open the equation in
WinWord, add and remove one character, then save and close. WinWord will
fix the equation for you until the next time you save it on a Mac.
