error applying transforms

Hi, I am getting this message when trying to uninstall Office XP(2002) small business edition

'Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid.

This problem is addressed in MS knowledge base article 299699, but the problem is here descibed as occuring in Dell machines with office pre-installed

However, my installation is on a HP machine. And I don't think it was pre-installed. I have the same CDs. When I try to uninstall office through Add/Remove programs, it askes for the CD. I insert the CD, and then just as it looks as it starts to run setup, I get the message. Following both methods mentioned in the Knowledge Base doesn't work. When I run setup from the CD, the same error message appears. The current installation constantly asks for the CD to be inserted whenever any of the office apps are run. I installed Office 2003 hoping that this would upgrade 2002 and the problem would go away. However, it just seemed to install along side the old version, at least both versions now appear in add/remove programs. And what's worse, when I run any of the new office 2003 apps, I am asked to instert the Old office XP cds

I am at a loss as to what to do. Please help!!!!

Just a small correction to my original message. I think that Office WAS pre-installed since the CD case has a Hewlett Packard stamp on the back along with the Office product key.
