Error moving/copying messages from 1 folder to another

M

Michael Shuber

The following seems to apply to many mailboxes in our Exchange 5.5
environment.

I am tryinig to move messages from one folder to another and I constantly
get the following message:
"Can't copy the items. Some items could not be copied. They were either
moved or deleted, or access was denied."

I have tried to move these using the exchange admin account.
I have tried different versions of Outlook (2000 / 2002).
I have tried to copy/move to different folders.
I have noticed that I can do one message at a time, but only if I open the
message first. Obviously I can do this for the whole thing but there is a
few thousand messages.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Mike

First question: Do these messages have attachments?

Second question: Are you running any anti-virus software, particularly on
the Exchange Server itself?

Usually when I see this issue, it's because the AV software on the Exchange
Server is taking too long to process messages as Outlook is requesting them.
Whenever the virus definitions on the server are updated, all attachments
are flagged for a scan. If that scan doesn't happen, each attachment is
scanned when it's next accessed. Outlook gets impatient because the server
is taking longer than Outlook is willing to wait to hand the message over.

If this is indeed the issue, you need to either open all your messages that
contain attachments at least once, or you need to run a scan with the AV
software on the Exchange mailbox store so the attachments get marked as
"safe".

Patrick,
You hit it right on the head! AV software (Symantec) on the server is being
picky. I worked around this by temporarily turning off smtp, then AV on the
server, moved messages, then turned back on AV and smtp.
Thanks!
