Excel 2004 for MAC

I am downloading an excel file on Excel 2004 for MAC, that is to be
opened with Windows Excel 97 or 2000. I receive a runtime error 5
everytime I download the file and the macros cannot be enabled even
though I select enable macros. Do I need a converter?

No you do not need a converter. But, your explanation is a little unclear. I
assume you already downloaded the file from an Excel 2004 for Mac source. If
you can't enable the macros on the windows machine, it means that the macro
security level is set too high. Open Excel and go to the
tools-macro-Security and set the level to medium. Then report what happens.

I meant the file is being downloaded on a MacBook using Excel 2004 for
MAC. The source I am downloading the file from indicates that it can
be opened using Excel 97 or 2000.

Hello Adcovar -

In that case I would think the most likely situation is that the file
contains code that is trying to execute on launch. For whatever reason it
isn't able to execute as it is intended & generating a runtime error. You
may be able to open the file by holding [Shift] while double+clicking the
icon. Then you can examine the code to make a better determination &
adjustments from there.
