Excel: opening file creates blank workbook

in Excel/MS Office Pro 2003, whenever an existing .xls file is opened Excel
apparently opens and creates a blank workbook first ( Book 2 ?) and then
opens the requested, existing file after that. Both the existing file and
new, empty file will then be open. tia for any help in fixing this odd
problem...
