Is it possible to format excel,so that if you change the
colour of a some numbers in a series or numbers (say from
black to red), the red numbers in the row or columb could
be totalised.

Depends upon how the cells' color got changed. If by Conditional Formatting,
you can use the same criteria to total the cells.

If changed manually, Excel needs help from VBA.
