Explain "Automerge" field's function in Data Source of Mail Merge.

While creating a data source to use in creating letters using Mail Merge, I
noticed that an "Automerge" field was inserted into my data source file,
along with the fields I purposefully established, such as Last Name, First
Name, Street Address, etc. The "Automerge" field is blank for all records.
What is this "Automerge" field and can it help me manage my data source file
in some way?

No, typically Automerge is used for empty fields. What application are
you using for your data source?
