Extra page in document

Folks:

MacOS 10.3.3, Office 2004. G4 Sawtooth.

Page 'n' commences with a table. (This table used to break across the
previous page boundary. I followed instructions on the MVP site to get it
to stay together on one page.) The table is followed immediately by a
two-line caption (text followed by shift-return followed by more text
followed by para mark.) The caption has the style "caption", which is
Normal + Font: Bold, Centered, Space Before: 6 pt, After: 6 pt.

All this fills no more than 1/4 of the vertical space in a standard page.
The para mark following the second caption line is the last thing visible on
page 'n'.

Page 'n+1' is entirely empty. (That's the problem!)

Page 'n+2" commences with a level 2 header that's uses the default for
"Heading 2" except I've added "Page break before".

In "normal view" page 'n+1' is delimited at the top by a dotted line going
entirely across the page, and by a ".........Page Break........." line at
the bottom. There's nothing between these two lines.

My question: How do I get rid of the entirely empty page 'n+1'?

Comments: I've been taught by a number of you to use styles wherever
possible and avoid manual formatting. My document reads best with each
level 2 heading starting at the top of a new page, so I set the heading 2
style accordingly. I can't see anything about the caption style that
should create a page break after it. I can't see any para setting "page
break below"!

More comments: I cleared formatting from the header at the top of page
'n+2' and the extra page disappears. But it reappears when I reapply the
Header 2 style. I've tried closing and reopening the document. I forced a
new "Normal" template either yesterday or the day before. The rest of the
document seems intact and the formatting looks good. Compatibility
Report...reports nothing wrong. And yes, I've checked the MVP site
"Formatting and Layout FAQ".

Thanks,

Henry

In Normal view, the "......Page Break......." appears when a manual
break is inserted, not when the break is caused by a style. Delete it.

It's a bit confusing that the page break closest to the Header 2 isn't the
"Page Break Before". In other words, how could you insert anything between
the page break tied to the Header 2 text and the text itself?

Anyway, I thought I tried deleting the second break once, and it did seem
tied to the Header 2. I tried again, and it worked. Some things....

Thanks,

Henry
