I can't explain why the F5 or screen icon aren't working,
but you can also view your show by clicking (in your
browser) Slide Show > View Show

Can you tell us more about what you mean by "nothing is happening"? It could
be as simple as the presentation being set up to play on a second monitor,
or it could be more complex. (To check if it is set to play on a second
monitor, go to Slide Show--> Set up Show and check the lower right area of
the dialog box.)

It sounds as if you are sending the PowerPoint show to a non-existent video
output.

Try this ...
1) Shut down PowerPoint
2) Reopen your presentation
3) Click on SlideShow => Set-up Show
4) If the box with Multiple Monitors is not grayed out, change it to display
Primary Monitor.
5) Ok out of the dialog box
6) Press F5

If this fixes the problem, then you were sending the show to the secondary
display, which, if not connected up does not appear to do anything.
Post back if this does not fix the issue.
