Is it possible to fax directly from my computer? I have Windows XP
with the usual bundle of MS Works etc.

This question hardly pertains to the subject of this newsgroup - but yes,
provided your PC is fitted with a fax modem and you update the Windows
installation from the add& remove programs applet of control panel to add
the fax service.
