fields in headers/footers and mailmerge not printing correctly

Problem: I enter say page number or date field in a
header or footer in Word '97. It looks ok in "Normal"
view but in "print preview" and on what is actually
printed, appears the name of the field instead of the
contents, as {PAGE}instead of a digit 1, 2, etc.
Same problem is occurring with Mailmerge:
I inserted a MERGEFIELD into the Word document and created
the mail list of first names. It looks right in "Normal"
view but in Preview and on paper it comes out as e.g.
{MERGEFIELD Firstname} instead of the actual name from the
mail list, say "Barny and Betty". (They aren't on the
list actually!)
Help, I need somebody, help!

Try this:

Go to Tools > Options
The View tabs should have a check box for field codes; un-
check the box that should do it.

Let me know if it worked.
