File icon

You can't change the icons of the default MS Office 2003 programs, but what
you can do is create new links to the executable files, and allocate your
icon of choice.. so for Word, you would look for 'winword.exe', no
parentheses, and create your link and selection of icon..

Changing the icon of document files may cause you to lose files unless you
are into keeping them into separate folders

I don't understand what you mean by this statement - could you expand
on what you mean by losing files if you change the icon?

Recently, I came across somebody who had 'changed' the document icon for a
Word file by going into File types and picking a prettier one..
unfortunately, the person lost the document after doing this.. apparently,
this practice was not unknown among a group of friends, although one or two
had problems finding and re-opening documents changed in this way..

Maybe I should keep my more arcane experiences while supporting clients to
myself..

Gotcha! I couldn't figure out how changing an icon could 'lose' a
document. :)
