File lock problem

hi,

The problem is that some Office files (.doc .xls) are locked such
that they can't even be copied. Not all of the files, but some files
and there is no particular pattern. In effect, these files are locked
out and can't be accessed, backedup, scanned etc.

Doing CHKDSK during reboot solved it for some files (these can
now be copied or opened) but not for many others. Further
CHKDSK and reboots have no effect.

The PC concerned is on a very small network with WinXP Home.
The C drive was shared out initially but this has since been changed.

Any idea what could be going on?

NortonAV 2004 is installed, WinFirewall is enabled, WinXP sp2
installed. Office2000 without patches is installed - could this be the
cause of the problem?

Any idea what is going on?

TIA,
Eugene Tan

I have had similar issues. Hopefully this will help. First go to properties
and make sure that read only is off (you probably have done this). Next go
to the security tab and click on advanced. Click on owner. Select a user to
take control. Change it to yourself or the system administrator.

hi,

Thanks for replying and let me elaborate.

The OS is WinXP Home, so there's no security tab.
I've looked at the KB and can't find how to display this with WinXPH.
Anyway, readonly shouldn't lock the file that one can't even copy with
WinExplorer.

Anyway, the user is running as an administrator. Whether the user that
created the folder or another user (all administrator accounts), makes
no diff and the file is still locked.

The next step I was thinking of doing - quite drastic - is to take out the
HD to another PC and see what's going on after a scan with NortonAV.

Does servicepack2 do anything to an original unpatched Office2000 (ver9)
app or doc?

TIA,
Eugene Tan

hi,

I haven't tried but as mentioned, it is a file-level lock - not even Norton
could scan the file(s), nor could it be copied in WinExplorer.
Someone suggested using command prompt to copy and I'll try but
expect the same problem but will note the error msg.

Regards,
Eugene Tan
