In Word's Tools=>Options=>File Locations
what location is set as the default?
If 'My Documents' then go through Windows Explorer
and right click on the 'My Documents' folder to
see what location it's pointing to.

my word and excel files save to the desktop, not to the my documents folder.
This happens only for one network user. >>
