filename too long - Fix for 325573 Problem?

Is there a fix for the "You receive error messages when you try to open an
Office document" problem (Problem being file paths longer than 218 characters
are not supported in Office, but other filetypes in same path such as .PDF
and .TXT open fine)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325573/

We feel that Office Professional 2003 should be able to open files as other
apps can since this is Microsoft and is using the Explorer shell like other
apps. Is a fix in the works for this?

Is there a reason why you must have a file named
using more than 218 - 258 characters?

It is not just filename, but filePATHS as well. Yes, our users have a file
structure with many folders and long (but not outrageous) filenames.
\\servername\volume\main\public\1 - files\2 - setup\3- docs\test.doc for
example.

Other file types like PDF, TXT, open fine, only Office has this bug.
Telling a user to limit filepaths and filenames in this day and age is
unacceptable to the user and harkens back to 8.3 limitations. They don't want
to count characters in the filepaths/filenames.

Microsoft fixed the 255 character root C:\ filepath\filename limitation a
while ago in Windows 95, this should be fixable as well in Windows XP/Office
2003.

Have a Happy New Year! 2006 is here!
