Fill-in Fields in a Header

Using Word 2002 there is a problem when a fill-in field is
added into a header.
If the document is printed, it then asks to re-enter all
the fill-in fields in the document in reverse order.
When all fill-in fields are 'OK'ed to get rid of them, the
document prints with no problems.
Apparently, someone in our office knew an option to fix
this, but for the life of me I can't find it now!

Interestingly, when the fill-in field in the header is
deleted, and the document closed & opened, the problem
still occurs.

Fields in headers/footers seem to update on printing whether or not you have
the print option checked to update fields.

You could use an ASK field in the body of your document with a corresponding
REF field in the header/footer.

You could also look into using a UserForm to gather the information for your
document and insert it in the appropriate places. See

Another option that won't require programming and may work is an online

Thanks Charles,
My first response to this was also "Just don't put fields
in the header!"
The Ref Field may be what we need, as I have to be able to
explain the solution to people who don't have little Word
experience.

I did think at first that they had the 'update fields'
option ticked in Print Options, but soon found out that it
made no difference when the field is in the header.
An odd problem, no?

Anyway, I will play around with the Ref field. Thanks for
your response.

Note that except in merge situations, ASK fields have to be triggered with a
