floppy problem

J

Joanne

I have saved information on my floppy. I originally was
able to retrieve data, but I no longer can. It tells me
file permission for document or drive....

What can I do to get this information off the floppy?

I need it ASAP or sooner.... Thank you in advance for any
help.

It may be too late.

If you want to be able to use your documents, when working with in Word, act
as if your floppy drive does not exist. (This applies to CDRW/CDR drives as
well.)
Don't use Word to:
Open a document on a floppy
Print a document on a floppy
Edit a document on a floppy
Save a document to a floppy (not even a copy)

Word regularly trashes documents on floppy drives!

Instead, work on the document using your hard drive. Copy it back and forth
using Windows.

I know that for some with shared computers (libraries) this is a tough
prescription. All I can recommend for that is to use a brand new formatted
disk each time you save and don't do any editing.

Charles,

What version/s of Word and what OS are you referring
to, and where might I find that information to
corroborate your info and clarify it with further
details re the floppy drive?
I have never seen that happen, though I've skipped a
couple of versions of Word here and there, and I've
used Word since 1.1/2.0 or whatever it was back then.
Do you know of any ways to duplicate the problem?
As long as the disk doesn't become full, I have
never seen any problems with any kind that way, and
when the problems do occur, it's a "Disk Full" error
message.
As for CD's, that advice is semi-accurate, but not
for any of the reasons you stated.

And finally, how does all of your response relate to
File Permissions?

If you've never seen it happen, you have been very lucky. Word 97 - 2000 are
worst recent offenders. I don't know that it is OS dependent. My
understanding is 2002-2003 are somewhat better if the proper options are
used, but I wouldn't do it with them. Watch these newsgroups a while and
you'll get all the corroboration you need.

Don't know the reasons for the CD problem, just the results.
