Flowchart, no connection sites showing up for connector lines

I'm trying to do a simple flowchart using the drawing tools autoshapes and
the connection sites aren't showing up on the flowchart shapes for me to
attach my connector lines. It kind of defeats the purpose if the connectors
don't work. Any thoughts on what I'm missing?
Thanks,
Janet

Thanks Suzanne, I was trying to avoid using the drawing canvas but it's not
possible.

Not and have connectors, no, but I share your aversion for the drawing
canvas. Note that you can make the canvas In Line With Text, which helps a
bit, though it's contents are still in the drawing layer.

Two related questions for Suzanne:

1) I find that connectors are available only when Tools | Options | General
| "Automatically create drawing canvas..." is cleared (disabled), which seems
to contradict your instruction above. Related to that is that connectors,
even when enabled, won't connect, that is they aren't "noticed" by the
targeted shape and so don't "stick" together. And this is happening only in
Word; similar attempts in Excel work perfectly. Very confusing.

2) How do I set default properties for a connector (or any other shape); any
line now created comes out as "no line," that is invisible.

Thanks for your thread.

Perhaps I see the problem. I'm working within a table, trying to poin from
the contents of one cell to another cell, which seems to change all the
normal rules. Can a drawing page float over an entier table, many cells?
