Folders Disappeared in coutlook Express

I have Windows ME. Just now, when I opened Outlook Express, I found
that 90% of my folders (and hundreds of messages) are completely gone.
The only things remaining are my inbox (with "Welcome" message from
MS), Sent (blank), and Drafts. Can anyone explain how this could have
happened, and if there is any way to retrieve the data? Thanks.
