How do I add footers to presentaions created in earlier versions of PowperPoint?

Earlier than what? <G> Footers have been available at least since
PowerPoint 97.

Open the presentation, go to View > Master > Slide Master. Then go to
Format > Master Layout and select the fields that you want to have
displayed. Then format the footer playholders to your liking, i.e. add any
fixed values. Then go to View > Normal > Headers and Footers and make sure
that "Footer" is selected and "Slide Number" and "Date" if you want them and
select "Apply All".
