Footnote not going away

I have 500 plus footnotes in my thesis. All of a sudden, the Word 2000
program stopped deleting corresponding footnote text when I delete a
footnote. As well it does note change the numbering of the footnotes
accordingly.

This also means that if I cut a large piece of text that includes footnotes.
The footnote text remains even though all the corresponding text with the
footnotes are gone.

Has anyone else ever had this problem and what do I do!!!!! My thesis is due
soon and I am screwed if I can't fix this problem.

Yes! And that was my problem. I turned the feature off and everything was
fine! THANK YOU. one last question though. I unfortunately saved a copy of my
document with one footnote missing, I guess while track changes was enabled.
This means that note 444 does not exist in my document; 443, 445 either as a
reference marker of corresponding fottnote text. Do you know if there is a
way to re-number my footnotes without having to re enter them all?

I figured out a way to solve my problem. I took the same section from another
draft (with track changes disabled!!!) and pasted it over the section with
the missing footnote. Seems to have solved things.
You have no idea how much of a headache your advice has saved me. You truly
are an MVP! Thanks again

Note that just turning Track Changes off is not a complete solution. You
must also Accept All Changes in Document for the changes to be final.
