footnote problem

Normally, there is a line above the footnote description approx 2 inches
long. On a document I am working on, the line has the numbers 1.1.1.1.1
ahead of it (as if it is part of a outline numbering scheme.) There appears
to be no way to format or "get to" this line. What is happening and how do I
fix it ?

1. Switch to Normal view.

2. View | Footnotes.

3. Click the down arrow beside the box on the toolbar that shows Footnote
Text. Select Footnote Separator.

4. Click in the footnote separator and see what style it is in. It should be
Normal but sometimes it gets to be something different.

5. If it's not Normal, change it to that. If it is Normal, press Ctrl+Q. If
that doesn't help, then you have added numbering to your Normal style, and
there's not going to be much way to fix this except to set up outline
numbering properly; see

That line is a Footnote Separator. Switch into Normal View and go to View |
Footnotes. A footnote pane will open up at the bottom. Use the dropdown
menu at the top of the pane to access the separators and edit as desired.
