Forcing files to open in office not IE

Hi Guy

Having a bit of a nightmare here trying to work out if this is possible

Basically, on our intranet there are a load of doc files. When users click to view them, it fires them up in an IE window albeit with certian Word controls etc. However I really need to make it so it loads the files directly into the full version of Word, not the basterdized Internet Explorer window

Is this possible

Many thanks in advanc

I'm not an official Microsoft expert but...

When you click on the file, do you get a dialog box
asking you whether you want to open the file in its
current location or save it to disk?

If so, you can select "save this file to disk" and open
it normally from wherever you save it (it defaults to a
not very useful location so you may want to specify where
you want to put the files).

Also, in some versions of IE, I've had the dialog box pop
up twice for some reason, but it worked after I told it
twice to save the file, so do not despair if it pops up
again.

That dialog box does default to "open this file in its
current location" which is the bastardized IE window
option you mentioned (which I don't like either).

If you don't have the dialog box, I don't know how to
bring it back but there is probably somebody here who
does.

Hope this helps.

You want to do these steps:

1.. Launch Windows Explorer.
2.. From the View menu, select Options("Folder Options" if Internet
Explorer 4.0 is installed).
3.. From the Options dialog box, click the File Types tab.
4.. From the listing of "Registered File Types," select "Microsoft Word
Document," and click Edit.
5.. From the Edit File Type screen, clear the "Browse in same window"
check box, which toggles whether a Word document is launched outside of
Internet Explorer.
6.. Click OK to close the dialog boxes.
This will force IE to open Word documents in Word. You can do the same to
other file types.

I believe you can also configure this on the webserver side of things by
transmitting the file with a Content-Disposition: Attachment;
filename=foo.doc header.
