formatting a thesis: roman and arabic page numbers

I am formatting a thesis and have some front matter
(signature page and title page) that should have no page
numbers. Then about 5 pages of roman numeral pages (i, ii,
etc.) and then the body of the text with arabic page
numbers. My problem is that I want to begin numbering
with page i on page 3 and it keeps saying iii instead.
I've gotten the dialog box and checked the box that says
start with i but that makes no difference. I've tried
sectioning but that doesn't seem to work. How can I make
my page 3 appear as page i and then number consecutively
from that point? Also, how can I change to arabic numbers
for the body text and not have my roman numeral numbering
revert to arabic? Thanks.

sectioning is the key here indeed. For your problem (and a lot more that
might be good to read through for a thesis), see:
