Inserting different page numbering systems

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I'm having dual difficulty. I need to insert Roman numerals, beginning with numeral ii on the THIRD page of my document, then switch to Arabic numbers after 11 pages.

Problem 1: When I try to insert the Roman numerals, when I check "don't insert number on first page" I still get a number on the first page and it's an Arabic 1, then a blank page, then a 3, then (finally) ii, iii, iv, etc.

Problem 2: I can't switch to Arabic numbers, even after inserting a page break, section break (next page) or section break (continuous).

I'm feeling pretty discouraged, and will appreciate any help/instruction. Thanks.

When you use Sections in a document each Section can have its own set of
Headers & Footers or the Headers & Footers can be carried forward to the
next Section. You need to reassess where you're inserting your Section
Breaks & modify the attributes of each appropriately using the Header &
Footer features in the Formatting Palette. In any Section that needs to use
different page numbering you need to remove the Same as Previous check for
that Section. In any Section where you do that (other than Sec 1) the
reference to "first page" pertains to the first page of that section, not
the first page of the document.

When you modify the page numbering make sure you are in the appropriate H/F
for that section.

Manual Page Breaks have no impact on page numbering formats or properties,
they only increase the number of pages and are best avoided to begin with.
