Formatting after Excel Import

Chellie P

When I try to import data into Project from Excel, I lose all of my
formatting (i.e., Tasks and subtasks). Is there a way to maintain the proper
thread or at least copy the formatting down through the entire project for
all similar tasks?

Hi Chellie P,

You may want to take a look at fellow MVP, Jack Dahlgren's "Export hierarchy
to Excel" macro at:
http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm

If you are not comfortable using VBA and macros, another option I can offer
is to export the Outline Level field with the other fields into Excel. Use
Autofilters in Excel to display only the level 2 tasks, indent, then level 3
indent twice etc. to do some quick formatting.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,
I think Chellie is going the other way (i.e. Excel to Project).

Chellie,
I assume you are using an import map and yes, formatting will NOT be
maintained. You could use another column in Excel to track the outline
level and then import that along with the other data. If it is imported
into the Outline Level field in Project, at least the hierarchy will be
maintained. If you also have font characteristics (e.g. Bold, italic,
etc.) I'm afraid that formatting will have to be manually re-applied
once the data is in Project.

Yikes! John you are *so* right. Chellie, I'm sorry and I hope I didn't
waste too much of your time.

Sheepishly,

Thanks Chellie. Glad to know you found John's correct information helpful
and my "mis-direction" useful as well.
