Formatting outlines - problems

N

Nancy Faber

I am having a fit with a 'quirk' in formatting outlines.
I have text from a teaching outline sent to me in a text
format. I copy and paste a section into a Word document
and apply 'Format Bullets and Numbering' to create
a 'tradtional' outline. My problem is this: as I scan
thru, there are a few lines that end up being out of place
and I need to upgrade or downgrade them in the outline by
tabbing. (example: change 'A. Heading' into '1. Heading'
by tabbing). This will not work and I don't know why.
With the cursor next to 'Heading', I tab and it
moves 'Heading' over 5 spaces, leaving the A. just where
it was. This is a new installation of this program on my
new computer. I have the same program at work and have no
problem with it. Is there a setting or tool I need? This
is making me absolutely crazy.

Thanks for anyone's input.

Hi Nancy

To get Word to set indent levels when you press tab, in earlier versions of Word, Tools | Options | Edit. Tick "Tabs and backspace
set left indent". In Word 2002, Tools | Autocorrect Options | AutoFormat as you Type. Tick Set left- and first-indent with tabs and
backspaces. If you've never visited this dialog box before, avoid the temptation to tick anything that isn't already ticked.

There's also some information about setting up outlines at:

Hope this helps.
