FP: why vti_cnf ???

S

Why FP ALWAYS makes two extra folders - vti_cnf and vti_pvt? do i HAVE to
copy them to my server or not?
I make pages with FP but now since i changed my server provider, i will
upload them with ftp, so i'd like to know
Thanks.

If you FTP you don't need to FTP any of the FP _vt* folders

So, i guess they are just for FP working, right? I suppose i can't make FP
to stop them making, can i? They are real pain in the ass...

It's just annoying since i can't just upload whole dir before i delete those
folders each time or upload file by file..., on the other hand i like FP
sicne i can make my pages nicely, while most other web makers require
knowledge of html code...i like to make things as WYSIWYG...
Or maybe you know for some other program who cn do this?

These folders are used locally by FrontPage to manage your web. Do not
delete the local copies. In addition, they are used when publishing via
FrontPage server extensions, which is by far the most common way (and
prefereable) to upload a web site.

my service provider told me that managing my web site via FP is a risky
thing and not advised to do...

Please define "risky" and provide some of the examples or documentation they
gave you.

Ask him why, as I do not believe him. I manage al of my
sites with FP, even though alot of my content is no longer
created in FP. I also manage the servers my sites are on,
and I have had no problems.

my service provider told me that managing my web site via FP is a risky
thing and not advised to do...

Then your service provider is ignorant and not to be trusted.

he said intrusion is more likely in case FP extensions are enabled...

Intrusion is likely into any server or computer if the proper security steps
are not taken.

He still hasn't told you why intrusion is more likely. This is the old
general cop-out due to ignorance.

Anyway, they aren't going to tell you much more. That is the case with
certain hosts who do not have a clue about configuring and using FP server
extensions, so they use the old "risky" cop out.

Sorry you are having these issues. I would suggest you might wish to change
to a host that does provide the extensions. Those that do and who support
them, know how to keep them secure.

FWIW, I've been running FP server extensions on our server for years. And
with proper security in place.

Aha...well, it's good to know more about this. My provider can and will
enable these extensions if i ask him, he just told me this "security"
reasons... in fact, i wonder too what these ext. have to do with greater
security risk...but, on the other hand, it's no problem to upload via ftp
program, and i can left out those vti files that way...
