From List to Headings

I know you can link heading levels to styles of numbering, but can you go the other way. You have a list formated in one of Word's outline lists. At each level, the list element is body text. Can you tell Word to apply, say, the level 1 heading style to the root list style; level 2 heading style to the next list level, etc?

Yes you can. Go to Format > Bullets and Numbering. Select the Outline
Numbered tab. Select the numbering option you want from the gallery. Click
Customize. Click the More button. Make selection from the 'Link level to
style' list.
